Volunteer Program

Macquarie Abroad is offering overseas students the opportunity to volunteer, allowing students to gain a wider understanding of their local community. This is your chance to gain a new experience, meet other Australians and give something back to the community.

You might be thinking, "The little bit that I can do will never help much!" or "What in the world can I do?" No one person can solve the world's problems, but what little you do can make your little corner of the world a happier, healthier, safer place to live for those who need your help.

If you have 5 minutes:

You could place a friendly phone call to an elderly person.
If you have 5 hours
You could clean up a National Park.
If you have 5 days
You could build homes for Habitat for Humanity for the less fortunate.
If you have 1 month
Work in the outback protecting native wildlife environments

However, your community is not the only one who will benefit from your volunteer work. Volunteering for you can mean increased self- esteem, feeling appreciated for doing a worthwhile job and bringing new meaning to your life. A volunteer experience can teach you about yourself, current issues, government services and your local community.

Today, volunteering is a lot more than stuffing envelopes and licking stamps. Your mind and your muscles are needed. You can work alone or with other people, at home or in the community, on your schedule. You set the hours and job that you want to participate doing.

If you are interested in volunteering...

You should consider a few important points before you commit yourself to any volunteer work:

• What are your expectations?
• What are the skills you have to offer?
• Would you like to learn something new?
• What are the volunteer opportunities that will also help you to achieve your other goals in life?
• Do you want a long- term assignment or something temporary?
• How much time are you willing and able to spend?

While most nonprofits are eager to find volunteer help, there are several things an agency will expect from a volunteer:

• Be committed to the aims and philosophy of the organisation you are working with
• Be motivated and willing to learn new skills with others
• Undertake your work in courteous and conscientious way
• Demonstrate responsibility and reliability
• Use initiative
