English Language Requirements

All international students at Macquarie are required to provide evidence of proficiency in English. There are three ways that you can fulfil the English requirements for admission to Macquarie University.*

*Please note: for all programs in Education ,  Translating and Interpreting, Advanced Medicine, Clinical Audiology, English Literature, higher English language requirements apply.

1. Complete an approved language test as follows:

Minimum 6.5 overall, with 6.0 in each section

TOEFL (paper based test)

Minimum 580 overall, with 53 Listening, 52 Reading, 59 Structure/ Written Expression, 5.0 TWE

TOEFL (computer based test)

Minimum 237 overall, with 19 Listening, 19 Reading, 25 Structure/Writing

TOEFL (internet based test)

Minimum 92 overall, with 18 Listening, 17 Reading, 22 Writing, 22 Speaking

CCPE (Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English)

C pass

OR

2. Study English at an approved Australian ELICOS college

American Samoa, Australia, Canada, Fiji, Ireland, Kenya, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Africa, United Kingdom (including Northern Ireland), United States of America or Zambia
AND have at least one assessable qualification from one of the countries listed
AND the language in which you undertook the qualification was English.

or if you were not born in:
American Samoa, Australia, Canada, Fiji, Ireland, Kenya, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Africa, United Kingdom (including Northern Ireland), United States of America or Zambia
BUT you have completed senior secondary study or at least one year of full-time university study in one of these countries in the last 2 years
AND the language in which you undertook this qualification was English.

Being born in Australia or one of the countries listed does not automatically pass you for English proficiency. You must also have at least one assessable qualification from one of the countries listed.


*This option does NOT fulfil the English language requirements for postgraduate programs in Translating and Interpreting, postgraduate programs in Education or Clinical Audiology, Advanced Surgery or English Literature.

The following tests and programs are also accepted (except for postgraduate programs in Translating and Interpreting, postgraduate programs in Education, Clinical Audiology, Advanced Surgery or English Literature):

Netherlands VWO (pre-university education)

With an overall score of at least 7 in English

Netherlands HAVO

With an overall score of at least 7 in English (after at least 1 year of tertiary education)

C pass in Humanities subjects

Humanities subjects: Ancient History/Classical studies, Archaeology, Business Studies, Communication Studies, Economics, English (English Language/ English Literature), General Studies, Geography, Government and Politics, History, History of Art, Law, Media Studies (Media is not a humanities subject), Philosophy, Religious Studies, Social Policies, Sociology, Drama and Theatre.

Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE)C pass in use of English

Completed AQF Certificate IV or completed Advanced Certificate. This includes a completed AQF Certificate IV in English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

Students are required to submit test scores directly to Macquarie International as soon as they are available. An offer of admission may be made pending the receipt of an English test result if all other entry criteria are satisfied.

Please Note: According to Australian visa requirements IELTS is now the only English Language proficiency test accepted by Australian Immigration Officials in certain assessment levels. Even with an offer from a university, an IELTS test result which meets the visa requirements may need to be shown before a student visa is issued.




English language requirements for programs in Education and Translating and Interpreting

Students who would like to apply for any program in Education or Translating and Interpreting need to achieve higher English language requirements as outlined below.

Minimum B grade in Advanced English

Australian Centre for Languages (ACL)

Students who would like to apply for programs in Advanced Medicine and Clinical Audiology need to achieve these higher English language requirements.

English language requirements for the program, Master of Arts in English Literature

Students who would like to apply for the Master of Arts in English Literature need to achieve these higher English language requirements.
