The Macquarie University Writing Skills Program can help you with your writing problems with a variety of services offered free of charge throughout the year. While primarily intended for undergraduates, postgraduate students are also welcome enquire about our services. The times of classes and enrolment lists for each course are posted on the Linguistics notice board C5A level 5 (phone 9850 8740). You can enrol by writing your name on the relevant list.
The Writing Gateway provides on-line writing support. It covers topics such as: academic writing, assignment expectations, time management, and writing anxiety. There are also step-by-step tutorials in writing your paper, from analysing the question to editing and proofreading; and sample essays and reports with marker feedback and tutor comments. http://writinggateway.mq.edu.au/
Credit courses: EAP 100 and EAP 101 are undergraduate credit-bearing units, open to students of non-English backgrounds enrolled in degree programs at Macquarie University.
Workshops: Weekly EAP workshops are open to postgraduate and undergraduate students of language backgrounds other than English. These include discussion skills, grammar skills and pronunciation. Enrolment is limited – please sign up during week one of the semester on the sign-up sheet on the noticeboard opposite W3A 407, where details of the time and room for the workshops will be posted.
Individual consultations: Students from language backgrounds other than English can make an appointment with an EAP academic staff member to discuss improving their academic writing. This is not a proofreading or editing service, but they will look at samples of your writing and offer suggestions regarding text organization, cohesion and clarity of expression. Individual consultations are normally 30 minutes in length. Consultations can be arranged by telephone or by e-mail, or by signing up on the booking sheet on the noticeboard opposite W3A 407. www.ling.mq.edu.au/programs/eap/
The Numeracy Centre aims to facilitate students' access to mathematics and numeracy-based courses, such as statistics, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and improve students' completion rates of mathematics and numeracy-based courses.
Located in C5A225, the Centre provides a free drop-in service from Monday to Thursday from 10am to 5pm and on Fridays from 9am to 3pm as well as on one evening a week (this varies from semester to semester, please check the timetable) and Saturday mornings. No appointment is necessary.
The expertise of each tutor is advertised to enable students to select the specific assistance they need. No assignment questions will be answered, but students have access to a small library of mathematical books, video and audio cassettes and professional help in the areas of greatest need.
