Intervention Strategy for international Students

Definitions
The following intervention strategy applies to all international students. An international student is a student who holds a student visa as defined by the ESOS Act, but does not include students of a kind prescribed in the ESOS Regulations.

Students who are identified as being At Risk of not meeting program requirements are those students who have:

•          failed 50% of their course enrolment in a compulsory teaching period
•          recorded two or more Fail Absent grades in two consecutive compulsory study periods or
•          undergraduate students who have a GPA which is less than or equal to 1.5

Identification of At Risk Students
International student academic records are reviewed and students are identified in accordance with the above At Risk categories, at the conclusion of each compulsory study period. This process takes place following the release of grades and the conclusion of the grade appeal process.

Intervention Strategy
An intervention strategy is implemented for international students who have been identified as being At Risk of not meeting program requirements.

International Student Advisers establish contact with students identified as being At Risk via the student’s University email account and hard copy letter sent to the student’s postal address.

Students are advised to contact the International Student Support unit to make an appointment with the appropriate International Student Adviser.

Intervention Interview with an International Student Adviser
Prior to the interview, the Adviser reviews the information that the student has submitted via the online questionnaire.

During the interview, the student is reminded that satisfactory academic performance is a mandatory requirement of their student visa. Students are advised that failure to maintain satisfactory academic performance may have serious implications on the student’s ability to continue studying at the University and on their visa status.

Students are asked to identify the cause of the difficulties that they are experiencing. They are asked to identify any personal and/ or academic issues they may have experienced in the previous study period. The Adviser provides students with advice on relevant on-campus study and support resources to assist the student in meeting course requirements.

Intervention Strategy
At the conclusion of the interview, an individual Intervention Strategy is developed to address the student’s academic and/or personal difficulties. This document details the activities the student is required to undertake and is signed by the student and their Adviser.

Recording Information
A copy of the notification to the student and the online questionnaire completed by the student  is retained on the student’s file.  An electronic record of  the intervention interview is maintained.
