Mobility Scholarships
Macquarie University's International Mobility Scholarship Scheme is amongst the most generous in the country. Macquarie undergraduate and postgraduate coursework students are all eligible to apply for a scholarship. The aim of these scholarships is to subsidise the cost of a student's international activity, not to cover the entire cost.
Mobility Scholarships are available for the following purposes:
- Exchange
- Language Study
- Study tours (including short-term programs)
- Internships
- Volunteer programs
- Conferences (for GLP students)
- Research (for undergraduate/postgraduate coursework credit)
Please note these are available to Undergraduate and Postgraduate Coursework students
These categories are funded in slightly different ways. This is outlined in the Outbound Mobility Programs Terms & Conditions, which also outlines which activities are likely to attract what sort of funding.
Study abroad programs organised independently by students are not eligible for mobility scholarships unless the student is enrolled in a credit-bearing unit or units at Macquarie University for the study abroad program before the study abroad program takes place.
How to Apply
Before submitting an application, students should thoroughly read the rules and regulations pertaining to mobility scholarships in the Outbound Mobility Programs Terms & Conditions.

Incomplete applications will not be considered until all the relevant documentation is provided.
Please make sure that all of the details in your application (including personal details and email addresses) are correct as we will use the information you have entered in to the database to process your application and contact you. We are unable to amend your details once you have submitted your application.
Apply for your mobility scholarship by completing the Online application.
Processing of Scholarships
The deadline for submission of mobility scholarship applications is the 15th of every month. Applications submitted after the 15th will be considered in the next month's batch. However, all applications must be submitted prior to the proposed activity taking place. Retrospective applications are not permitted.
Mobility scholarships will not be assessed until complete so please ensure you have spoken with your referee to ensure they complete their online reference as soon as possible.
Students will be notified of the result of their application by the 1st of the month following their deadline (e.g., for complete applications submitted by 15th March, applicants will be notified by 1st April), and will be notified via email if this period needs to be extended due to extenuating circumstances.
Enquiries about the status of mobility scholarships during the period between the monthly deadline (15th) and the 1st of the following month will not be answered.
Students with incomplete applications at the deadline will be processed in the following month's batch provided sufficient documentation has been provided.
Once an application has been approved, payments take between 4 and 8 weeks to be processed and Macquarie Abroad is unable to speed the processing of these payments - so be sure to apply well in advance of your planned overseas activity.
Payment
Payments of mobility scholarships will be in the form of an EFT payment directly into your bank account. If your application has been approved, you will receive an email notification within the specified time frame. This email will contain a banking authority form which you will need to fill out with your name, student number, email address and bank account details. In order to receive your payment, you will need to return this form, along with proof of travel insurance (please see below for insurance requirements) within one week of receipt of your email notification.
You will have two options to provide documentation. A scan of your banking authority form and travel insurance policy may be emailed to su.lim@mq.edu.au, or you can take your original banking authority form and a photocopy of your travel insurance policy to the front desk of Macquarie International, Level 1, Building E3A with these documents clearly marked "ATTENTION: SU LIM". Please do not submit documents via both methods.
If you fail to provide your bank account details and travel insurance policy within the one-week timeframe, your payment will be made with the next round after the correct documentation is received. Please note that your payment will not be processed until you have provided proof of travel insurance.
Student Obligations for Mobility Scholarships
Conditions of receiving a mobility scholarship include: having sufficient travel insurance; acting as an ambassador for Macquarie, showing relevant proof of completion and submitting a travel report based on your experience. You must also notify Macquarie Abroad in writing (email to the mobility scholarships officer is acceptable) if your planned activity changes in any way from your proposal. Students failing to declare changes in their activities will be found in breach of the conditions of the mobility scholarship.
Insurance
All applicants are required to show proof of sufficient travel insurance in order to receive a mobility scholarship. Insurance policies purchased should comply with Macquarie Abroad's Travel Insurance Policy.
The basic requirements of insurance are:
- Unlimited medical expenses
- At least AU$1,000,000 (one million dollars) medical evacuation costs and AU$100,000 (one hundred thousand dollars) repatriation costs
- At least AU$5,000,000 (five million dollars) in public liability insurance
Proof of insurance must be in the form of a receipt for the insurance policy outlining: the level of cover, the duration of cover, the total cost paid and the name of the policy.
Students without proof of insurance will not have their payments processed until sufficient evidence is provided.
Proof of Completion and Travel Report
All students are required to submit Proof of Completion for the activity they have undertaken. This is due within four (4) weeks of the completion of the activity. Please read the Guidelines for showing Proof of Completion for a Macquarie University Mobility Scholarship. All students are also required to submit a Travel Report based on their experience - this must be between 1 and 2 pages submitted with Proof of Completion. Students may discuss any aspect of their experience that they wish.
Students breaching the conditions of their mobility scholarship
Students breaching the conditions of their mobility scholarship will be required to repay the scholarship to the university. A sanction will be placed on the student's record until this is done, prohibiting students from graduating or receiving transcripts from the university. Students in breach of their mobility scholarship requirements may also be referred to the University debt collector or the NSW Police.
