How to apply for Cotutelle and Joint PhD
All candidates applying for cotutelle programs should first discuss with their (prospective) supervisors and the relevant administrative offices at both institutions to find out if such scheme is suitable for to their study and allowed at their host or home university. A legally binding Joint Supervision Agreement between the two universities is required before a candidate commences joint enrolment. A template agreement (Word document - 279KB) is available for download.
International candidates must meet the usual entry criteria for PhD programs at Macquarie University.
The application process for cotutelle study is summarised as follows: (link to detailed procedure)
1. Macquarie supervisor submit “Proposal for joint PhD enrolment” (Word document - 68KB) form to mi.hdr@mq.edu.au
2. Candidate applies to Macquarie University
3. Candidate applies to partner university
4. Macquarie supervisor agrees details with partner supervisor
5. Macquarie supervisor completes agreement, forwards to MI_HDR
6. If candidate application approved and meets scholarship standard, MI_HDR will arrange signatures at both university.
7. Candidate enrols or is transferred to cotutelle/joint program.
Detailed procedure
1. Macquarie supervisor submits “Proposal for joint PhD enrolment” (Word document - 68KB) to mi.hdr@mq.edu.aua. Supervisor discusses project, duration and funding with partner. In general it is expected that the partner will make a financial contribution to the project
b. Complete form
c. If priority 3 partner, submit to AD HDR for endorsement
d. Send form by email to mi.hdr@mq.edu.au
2. Candidate applies to Macquarie University
a. Application form should be marked ‘cotutelle’ or ‘joint degree’
b. Application sent to HDRO
c. Enquiries direct to hdrfuture@mq.edu.au
3. Candidate applies to partner university (if not already enrolled)
a. Candidate must meet all eligibility requirements of partner university
4. Macquarie supervisor agrees details with partner supervisor
a. Details such as scholarships, stipends, travel costs, other funding, whether requested or to be offered
b. Project title, duration, names of other supervisor
c. Identify partner signatory for agreement
5. Macquarie supervisor completes agreement, forwards to MI_HDR

b. Agreement template for joint degree is available from MI_HDR as it varies by university
c. Send by email to partner supervisor for additional conditions or details to be added
d. Forward draft agreement to mi.hdr@mq.edu.au for checking
7. Candidate enrols or is transferred to cotutelle/joint program.
a. For incoming candidates, HDRO will make the formal offer
b. For candidates already enrolled at Macquarie University, they will be offered a transfer to the appropriate program
