Cotutelles

Overview of Cotutelle/Joint PhD Enrolment

As part of its internationalisation strategy, Macquarie University actively promotes joint PhD enrolment (known as “Cotutelle” in French) with world's leading research active universities.

Simultaneous enrolment at Macquarie University and one of our partner universities will enable students to submit one thesis for joint recognition. About half of the student’s time will be spent at each university and travel funds are provided. Students will be supervised by researchers at the two universities and meet all the requirements to graduate at both of them.

At Macquarie, both inbound (ie student currently enrolled at an overseas university) and outbound (ie student currently enrolled in a PhD program at Macquarie) cotutelles are encouraged.  It is important to note that if you wish to enroll as a cotutelle student, you must meet the admission requirements for both universities.

Cotutelle Agreements

In addition to the usual candidature admission process, each cotutelle student will also need a legally binding Joint Doctoral Supervision (Cotutelle) Agreement before commencing his/her joint enrolment. The Agreement is negotiated between the two universities and meets mutual institutional requirements.  Click the link below to download the Joint Doctoral Supervision Agreement template or prepare a draft agreement:

If you do not have the appropriate software, we can help you to prepare the agreement. Please download the form below and send back to us:

Cotutelle Scholarships

Subject to meeting the criteria for MQRES (Macquarie University Research Excellence Scholarship), cotutelle students are eligible to apply for the Cotutelle MQRES, which provides the usual MQRES conditions such as full tuition waiver, a living allowance of around AU$20,000 per year (as per 2009), plus one economy return airfare between the cities of the two universities, and (for inbound international students) international student health cover. All MQRES recipients are expected to have a minimum rating of 3 under the scholarship rating guideline.
