Sydney has an excellent public transport system, with bus, train and ferry services throughout the city. Taxi services are also available, but quite expensive.
The railway network spreads from Bondi Junction in the east to the Blue Mountains in the west. Services depart at least every 30 minutes to most areas and far more frequently to most destinations. Inner-city trains depart every few minutes.
There are bus routes to almost everywhere, but frequency varies according to and some services only operate in peak times. State Transit also operates a sightseeing tour throughout the city called the Sydney Explorer, and another around Sydney’s beaches and bays, Bondi Explorer. Normal bus fares are based on distance and range from $1.20 to $4.60.
The water transport network operates regular services between Circular Quay in the city and most suburbs on the harbour and Parramatta River. State Transit and private tour companies also operate day and evening sightseeing cruises every day of the week. Tickets for normal ferry services including Jetcat and Rivercat services cost between $3.20 and $5.20.
Private International students in New South Wales do not get travel concession on public transport. The only international students who do get public travel concession are those sponsored by the Australian Government and students involved in formal university exchange programs.
Multiple trip tickets, known as "travelten", do provide a cheaper alternative. With a travelten ticket, most bus passengers ride for almost half the cost of buying a ticket from the bus driver. These tickets are only available for state transit authority buses (public buses).
