Macquarie 's course was good, the lecturers were good and it seemed to be a really good research university - research brings in the good lecturers.
I surf as well, so coming here was partly a lifestyle choice… Being midway between the city and the beach is awesome. There are beaches all the way up the coast and they are amazing. It's nice being in another country, because you are always learning new things about it.
I can be involved in things here that I just couldn't do in England . Last holidays I was involved in a whale watching study (with research students) – I could never do that at home.
I will spend two months on exchange at a university in Fiji in January, and I hope to do a course on the Great Barrier Reef in second year. Those opportunities were very much part of the appeal of the course. I'm really excited, I can't wait. The Macquarie travel grants are amazing.
I've been really impressed with most of the lecturers. They are genuinely passionate about what they do – it's great because that comes across (in their classes).
A lot of people see university as something you just have to ‘get through', but I like my life here, it's actually enjoyable. My friends (in the UK ) are really jealous…I think people see Australia as England in the sun.
