Working Holidays and Volunteering

Working and volunteering overseas is a great way to see a different aspect of a culture that cannot always be explored by simply studying.

Whilst Macquarie Abroad does not have any direct support programs for working holidays or volunteering overseas, there are a few that students can contact independently. Please note that these programs are not eligible for Travel Grants under the Vice Chancellor's International Travel Grant scheme.

Working holidays

Working holidays are an easy way of arranging to work overseas for a short period of time, and they are most often set up through a provider. There are a number of groups that run these programs on a non-profit basis.

Students usually select to go to Canada, the UK or the USA, although other destinations are available. The typical steps in applying for these programs is as follows:

  1. Choose a country
  2. Choose a program provider: These include IEP, Council Exchanges, CCUSA, or STA Travel also has information on available programs. There are many other programs, try a web search to find a longer list of providers.
  3. Approach the provider: In most cases, a program fee is required, as well as associated costs for visas and applications. They will often run compulsory information sessions, pre-departures and other events. Generally, they assist with finding a job, getting a visa and trip planning and insurance.

Volunteering

Volunteering internationally is a brilliant way to experience the world, help out a worthy cause, and is always a valuable addition to a resume.

There are countless organisations that can assist students with volunteer programs - from the YMCA to the UN and Peace Corps. Most major charitable organisations will have offices to assist in coordinating volunteer work. Search the web for 'volunteering overseas' for a sample of the organisations who can help.

Some things to note about volunteering:

  1. Some organisations require a fee in order to 'administer' the volunteer program. This is not entirely unreasonable, but it is advisable to confirm what items and services are included.
  2. Volunteers are unpaid. Thus, students must have adequate financial resources to cover their trip and additional activities.
  3. Volunteering is sometimes undertaken in risky places/situations. Students need to be ready to accept those risks. Travel insurance and vaccinations are absolutely essential.
