Cost of Short Term Exchange Programs

Short term exchange programs are a fantastic way to see the world and add international experience to your degree. In considering these opportunities, students should also carefully consider the various costs involved.

Each Macquarie International short term program has been selected for its affordability for students, but you should be aware of the different costs involved in your program. Travel grants and OS-Help Loans may also help you offset costs.

Application Fee

Students applying for short term exchange programs will be required to pay an Application Fee of AU$110.

The idea of this fee is to encourage students to think carefully about whether they have the means to undertake an short term program - it is not meant to discourage people from applying.

Students who have their applications rejected or who are accepted but then withdraw from the program will forfeit their fee - unless documented 'sufficient reason' is provided. This is because both Macquarie and our partner institutions must commit funds towards these programs from the beginning and a large number of students withdrawing can jeopardise the viability of programs and cost both institutions money. No application will be considered unless the application fee has been paid.

This fee is paid to the MiShop in person or online - for more, see How To Pay Relevant Fees

Logistics Fee

Most programs have a 'Logistics Fee'. This is to be paid to Macquarie by students after they are accepted into the program.

The Logistics Fee is a packaged price that will include various things – often accommodation, transport, meals, etc. Each program will have different inclusions in the logistics fee, so students should carefully check the relevant program outline for their desired program to see what is included in the fee.

The Logistics Fee does not include the cost of enrolment in a Macquarie unit, which attracts standard tuition fees. It is not possible to defer your Logistics payment on HECS.

This fee is paid to the MiShop in person or online - for more, see How To Pay Relevant Fees

In some cases, students will pay for accommodation or other fees directly to the host university instead of Macquarie.  Students will be informed of relevant payment procedures upon acceptance into the program.

Enrolment at Macquarie

Each student participating in an short term exchange program will be enrolled in a unit at Macquarie. This cost of enrolment is not included in the Logistics Fee listed above.

Enrolment at Macquarie for a short term exchange program attracts the same rate of tuition as being enrolled in a normal Macquarie unit. For example, if you are enrolled in a 100 level, 3cp Business unit for your short-term program, the cost of enrolment will be the same as enrolling in a normal 100 level 3cp BBA unit taught on campus.

Commonwealth Supported Students are able to defer their payments as normal, or receive a discount for paying up front.

Full fee paying students must pay their full tuition fee by the deadline specified on their e-student account.

For more on enrolment fees, please contact Student Fees.

Travel Insurance

Students participating in short-term programs will be covered by the Macquarie University travel insurance policy from the first day of the program at the host university until the last day of the program. This policy also covers you for an additional 30 days of "leisure travel time", which can be used either before or after your program, or both (but only up to a grand total of 30 days).
If you plan to travel for any extra period of time outside these dates, purchasing additional Health and Travel insurance before you leave is a mandatory requirement of exchange. This insurance needs to cover you for all the additional days you will be away.
Some universities, especially in the USA and Canada, may require you to purchase an insurance policy through them directly from that university. If this is required by the host university then Macquarie students will be required to purchase the additional insurance.

Other Costs

Students are required to purchase their own airfare, and should also budget for their typical living expenses - meals, transport, souvenirs, entertainment, etc. This amount really depends on each student's personal taste. Estimates are outlined in the program outlines.
