Trials for the Australian University Games begin

Although the Australian University Games don’t begin until the middle of September, Macquarie is beginning to recruit participants now.

In 2005 Macquarie was placed fifth overall.  Last year however, they improved to fourth and came first in the East Coast Challenge.

This year’s goal is for third or better and to be the best university from New South Wales.

The Games will cater to athletes from many sports.  There will be both team and individual events to become involved in.

The Games will have everything from more predominant sports like Aussie Rules Football or Rugby League and Union to more unusual sports like Bowling or Fencing.

A complete list of events can be found at the Macquarie University Sport and Recreation (MUSR) website.

“The Games are probably a student’s best way to represent the University,” says Kate Griffith from MUSR.  “Plus, the Games are being held on the Gold Coast in September, so it’s a great way for international students to see some more of Australia.”

Out of the 30 events in last year’s competition, Macquarie won 49 medals, 22 of which were gold.

Some of the best events in team sports were Softball and Ultimate Frisbee; where both teams were undefeated.

The University also excelled in individual competitions.  Participants did particularly well in Judo, Cycling, Swimming, and Athletics, all of which netted multiple medals.

Now MUSR representatives are looking for even more athletes to represent Macquarie during this year’s games.  The trails commence around May 14 and run for several weeks.

So check out the MUSR website or visit the Macquarie University Sport and Recreation Centre to find out how you can get involved.
