Sydney F.C. preparing for final with Macquarie
By Julia Pursche

In the lead up to the most important match of the season, A-League champions Sydney F.C. will be training on their home training ground, Macquarie University Sports Fields.

This Sunday night Sydney F.C. will play against Melbourne Victory for the trophy. In 2007, Macquarie University signed a five year agreement with Sydney F.C. with a range of mutual benefits. Sydney F.C. members can frequently be seen around campus as they also train at the Macquarie University Sports and Aquatic Centre.

Elite athletes such as the premiere football players are given academic support through the Elite Athlete Scholarship Program for those who choose to study.  Macquarie University students are given discounted ticket prices for Sydney F.C. memberships or individual tickets.

The Fox 8 football reality show, Football Superstar, was also filmed on the sports fields. The television show was an Australia wide search for an up-and-coming football star.

The winner of that competition, Adam Hett, won a one year sports scholarship with Macquarie University. Unfortunately for Hett, he sustained a severe injury to his knee preventing him from completing his scholarship.

The Macquarie Sports fields play host to a number of teams, from Sydney F.C. A-League and Youth teams, to the AIS U16 training squads to university teams.   Vincent Oxenham, Captain (2009) of the 1st Grade Mens Team and PhD Candidate is fanatic about football. "Between playing, training and watching, football takes up about 15 hours of my week."
