Academic Requirements
1. Undergraduate Programs
-
What qualifications do I need?To be eligible to apply to Macquarie University for an undergraduate program, you must have one of the following:
- A recognised secondary (high school) qualification
- A recognised University Foundation course
- A recognised two or three year Diploma
- At least one year of a university degree from a recognised institution -
How do I know if my qualification is 'recognised'?For secondary (high school) qualifications, please see the Recognised Secondary Qualifications list.
Macquarie University recognises Foundation Programs offered by most Australian universities, as well as some approved international programs.
Diplomas that are equivalent to Australian Diploma or Advanced Diploma levels are recognised by Macquarie University.
Degree programs that are equivalent to Australian degree levels (Bachelor or Master) are recognised by Macquarie University.
If your qualification does not fit into any of the above categories, or if you are unsure, you may still apply for entry and your application will be assessed by our admissions team. -
What mark or grade do I need?Entry to undergraduate programs is determined by an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) score for each course. The required ATAR and any additional entry requirements for each of our programs can be found in our online course database, while the ATAR Score Guide will help you convert your current qualification score into an ATAR.
NB: Prior to 2009, the ATAR was known as the Universities Admissions Index (UAI). The change reflects a national effort to achieve consistency in tertiary education selection ranks and will be implemented in all states (excluding Queensland) over the next two years.
For further information about these changes, please visit the UAC ATAR website. Our admissions team converts the results from other qualifications into the ATAR in order to determine whether you are eligible to enter a particular program. To make an enquiry about your ATAR, send an email to iso@mq.edu.au.
If you are studying a diploma or degree, the grades you have achieved will be used to calculate your equivalent ATAR. Because there are so many different grading scales in use around the world, you will need to submit your application for this to be calculated.
2. Postgraduate Programs
To be eligible for a Masters (coursework) program at Macquarie University, you must hold a Bachelor degree or equivalent from a recognised institution. Requirements for each course can be in the online course database or by using the course search above.
To apply for a Masters (research) or PhD program, you should be able to demonstrate research experience in your previous studies. More information on research requirements can be found on the Higher Degree Research pages.
